First of all, there’s no way this is the “epic conclusion,” so that’s a lie right there. Not to a franchise this inexplicably popular still. Second of all, I hate it when people are put back in the same outfits they were wearing the first time we saw them thirty years ago, as though they’ve never stopped wearing those exact same clothes they happened to be wearing on the day they visited Jurassic Park and were attacked by dinos. Really, Ellie Satler is still wearing the tied knot pink overshirt? And Ian Malcom in the same jacket and shaded glasses? Of course Alan Grant with the hat. How convenient and cringeworthy and fan service-y is that? But then, this series has never had a problem with fan service, has it? It’s less embarrassed by embarrassing crap than the Star Wars reboots. I suppose the shamelessness of these in a way makes them more watchable but only in a hate watching way.
Buzz Lightyear Teams Up with a Cat in New Trailer for 'Lightyear'
Now that the Toy Story timeline/universe of this film is clear to me (this is the biopic of the actual guy the Buzz Lightyear toy was based on) I can look at this as something of a real movie, even though like just about everything these days, it’s a cash grab spinoff attempt. It still doesn’t make sense to me why Tim Allen isn’t voicing him (unless it’s because of…you know), as a Woody movie would for sure be voiced by Tom Hanks no matter what.

POTD is the strong frontrunner in Picture, Director, and possibly Actor- Jane Campion is the first woman to be nominated twice in directing
Welp. I’m almost thinking that’s a wrap on Power of the Dog for Best Picture and Director this year, giving Netflix its first Best Picture win. It way overperformed with the Academy, hitting just about every category, even dragging Jesse Plemons along for an extra Supporting Actor nod alongside his wife (their first nominations!). The only question is can Will Smith take down Benedict Cumberbatch in Best Actor? That’s a close race, but King Richard did extremely well too, showing itself as a top five contender for sure. Other surprises were Kristen Stewart being resurrected in Best Actress after the SAG and BAFTA snubs (sympathy from the actors- pfff), while Penelope Cruz snuck in for her fourth nomination as a critical favorite for Parallel Mothers (alongside hubby Javier Bardem, another married duo with his & hers nods this morning). Major snubs included Belfast’s Caitriona Balfe, who was traded out for Judi Dench (boo!), Denis Villenueve in director, who lost out to Drive My Car’s Hamaguchi (who everyone thought was going to replace Spielberg or Branagh- nope) despite Dune’s 10 nominations, and poor Ruth Negga, who landed everywhere for Passing leading up to the Oscars, but was left off the list for Jessie Buckley, coattailing off The Lost Daughter’s Olivia Colman for her first nomination.

Some other stats to ponder this morning- Denzel Washington lands his 10th acting nomination, the most nominated black actor in history. JK Simmons was a surprise nod for Being the Ricardos, even though when I saw the movie I figured he must have a good shot at it. The actors like the movie, but does anyone else? This is why it’s hard to pinpoint a Best Actress frontrunner, with no nominee from a Best Picture candidate. Despite showing all that strength at SAG, House of Gucci really whiffed today, as Lady Gaga, until now the only Actress nominee to show up at every precursor, was left off the Academy’s list. So who leads then? It’s definitely not decided and we will only have SAG’s result as a tea leaf, since BAFTA won’t help with that at all this year. I suppose that means it’s a close, fractured race and it could well be any of them.
The critical darling Drive My Car, did very well today, propelled by critics and landing in Best Picture, Director and Screenplay
Jared Leto’s insane makeup and hammy House of Gucci role got him the SAG nom, so he may well be Oscar and Razzie nodded for this

Oh, I forgot. There was one more precursor nominations list before the Oscars tomorrow. And Jared Leto may well be one of those coveted Razzie and Oscar nominated performances for House of Gucci.

Can Gaga win this whole thing?
The British Film Academy is often a look into how some Oscar voters are feeling, because there is significant overlap in the two organizations. But their nominations are all out of whack too, because they have a jury system selecting most of the acting nominations and all of the directing nominations, in order to ensure some diversity in the picks. This year they tweaked them to allow the top two vote getters to get in, while the jury selected 4 of the 6 nominees for acting. This mostly means that Lady Gaga is the only Best Actress nominee to hit every precursor (there’s no way she was a jury pick) and she’s likely to win here, so is she the new frontrunner for Best Actress? Possibly. I’m waiting to see how well or poorly House of Gucci does with the actual Oscars, because so far it looks like the only place it has major support is with actors. What about the rest of the Academy? In other news, they really seemed to love Licorice Pizza and Power of the Dog, which by the way, is looking more and more like the frontrunner to win the whole thing every day. All in all, the BAFTA winners are usually more predictive than their nominees, so look out for those. But now that we’re done with precursors, the official Oscar nominations come in bright and early next Tuesday morning.

PGA and DGA Announce 2022 Nominees
Being the Ricardos suddenly popped up in the all important PGA and WGA nominees lists- could it snag a Best Picture nomination?
The Producers Guild nominations are here! The PGA often matches Best Picture and uses the same kind of ballot as the Academy, though theirs may have one or two mismatches. The big surprise of the PGA is Being the Ricardos, which suddenly showed up both here and at WGA (which kinda makes it seem like Nicole Kidman might be the lock for Best Actress?) And the big snub was Spider-Man, which I actually thought would get in at PGA, and that the Academy would be the harder swing for it. If it couldn’t even manage it here, the guild that nominated Avengers, Wonder Woman and Deadpool…I’d say that BP nom is probably not happening.

Now, the DGA. The Directors Guild is still the most important one for Best Picture, as the winner will always be one of these five films. I wouldn’t say there were any big surprises here (though maybe Paul Thomas Anderson is one, as he’s more of a highbrow choice for the usually populist DGA- he couldn’t even get in here for Phantom Thread). In fact, usually the directors branch of the Academy goes four for five or even three for five with the DGA, but this year I suspect these five will the ones chosen in the end by the Academy too. Unless Spielberg falls out for someone else, given West Side Story’s relative weakness in the guilds, but for who? The directors branch is usually more elite and arthouse, so if someone like Adam McKay, Aaron Sorkin or Reinaldo Marcus Green made it there over here, that’d be a surprise. But it could happen.

The Ace Eddie awards are a heavy precursor for what movies have Best Picture heat, which is why the snub of West Side Story in drama is troublesome for that film. Especially in favor of Bond of all things? The editors continue to show that Belfast and Power of the Dog are the frontrunners.

And now, the WGA. As always, so many movies are deemed ineligible for the writers guild awards, including Belfast and Power of the Dog, so if West Side Story couldn’t get in here, that’d be a serious problem. Cyrano hasn’t gotten much attention this season, but the CDG liked its costumes at least
The Costume Designers Guild announced its nominations today and there weren’t a lot of surprises in here. They do have three different categories, so it can be tougher to predict which ones get into the Oscars, but they usually go for period fare, so that category is probably most important. Every once in a while something from the fantasy group will make it in along with the period stuff, but not as often from contemporary.

Power of the Dog coming on strong with the guilds, as expected
More guilds today, with the announcement of the Cinema Audio Society and American Society of Cinematographers, representing the sound mixers and cinematographers unions. First up, let’s look at the CAS noms, with nods for Spider-Man and Bond, along with Dune, which has landed in every guild announcement so far. Action movies and musicals always make the sound categories, but this shows strength for The Power of the Dog, which is neither, and which also got a sound nomination from the editors.

And the ASC is a big precursor award that often matches Best Picture nominations, so the movies that land here are usually heavy contenders for the top prize. Which is why it’s surprising that West Side Story missed. And real strength again for Nightmare Alley, clearly a guild favorite at the very least. The ASC does love it some black and white, with Belfast and Macbeth getting in here. I think one of these misses at the Oscars though, probably for West Side Story.

The Scripter nominations are here! Usually a good bellwether for the adapted screenplay Oscar, this prize honors the best screenplays of the year and their source material. All of the honorees this year were based on novels except for the Shakespeare adaptation. The real surprise snub here was West Side Story, which was written by Tony Kushner and you’d think would have been a lock.
