Another Look at 'First Man' Ahead of Venice Premiere

Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic First Man kicks off the Venice Film Festival today, and the reviews seem pretty strong so far (early scores have it at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 on Metacritic). This is definitely a better trailer than the last one, but I just can't manage to muster up much interest in this film, to tell you the truth. Not sure why exactly- maybe because I'm not the biggest Chazelle fan (didn't like La La Land or Whiplash all that much). I'm glad it appears to be good, and I'll certainly see it, but the whole subject matter leaves me cold for some reason.

First Man - Official Trailer #2 In Theaters and IMAX October 12 https://www.firstman.com/ On the heels of their six-time Academy Award®-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures' First Man, the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight.

House of Horrors Comes to Life in Official 'Suspiria' Trailer

I'm not a big fan of the original 70's classic, to be honest, but this one does look intriguing, and I'm assuming the acting is going to be a lot better than in the old movie (sorry). Luca Guadagnino did Call Me By Your Name and is a big fan of the original, but I bet he can improve it. This one already looks much scarier.

A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up. Suspiria is in New York and Los Angeles theaters October 26, expanding nationwide November 2.

Chris Pine is Robert the Bruce in 'Outlaw King'

Chris Pine may have a questionable Scottish accent, but other than that, this movie looks pretty good. It's set to open the Toronto Film Festival in a couple weeks, and it's from David Mackenzie, who directed Hell or High Water, also with Pine. Florence Pugh, who was so good in Lady Macbeth, shows up in this, before playing Amy in Greta Gerwig's new Little Women later this year. It'll drop on Netflix in November so look out for it.

The untold, true story of Robert The Bruce who transformed from defeated nobleman, to reluctant King, to outlaw hero over the course of an extraordinary year.

Aretha Franklin 1942-2018

Aretha Franklin, the eternal Queen of Soul passed away today at the age of 76, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A pioneering influence on virtually every soul singer who came after her, and a crusader for civil rights as well as a brilliant artist. My favorite Aretha songs: 1) "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" 2) "I Say A Little Prayer For You" 3) "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" 4) "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" 5) "Respect" 6) "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" 7) "Baby, I Love You" 8) "Think" 9) "Spanish Harlem" 10) "Chain of Fools"

In tribute to her career, here she is stealing the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers out from under the stars:

Here she is performing at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 (and bringing President Obama to tears):

And finally, performing at Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009:

Stunning New Teaser for Alfonso Cuaron's 'Roma'

I love Alfonso Cuaron, so this is definitely my most anticipated movie of the fall. After a few films dealing with big budget special effects and studios, Cuaron decided to go back and make this deeply personal film about a middle class family living in Mexico in the 1970's, and amazingly, shot it himself. It's going to premiere at Venice on August 30th, but will debut on Netflix December 14th.

The most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien), ROMA follows ...

New Trailer Gives Us a Longer Look at Steve McQueen's 'Widows'

Here's a new look at Widows, the heist thriller coming out in November, from 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen. This is a better trailer than the last one, which I thought was kinda generic, so I'm mildly interested. I think maybe I'll check out the 1980's ITV series it's based on first.

From Academy Award®-winning director Steve McQueen ("12 Years a Slave") and co-writer and bestselling author Gillian Flynn ("Gone Girl") comes a blistering, modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption. "Widows" is the story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities.

Michael Moore is Back with 'Fahrenheit 11/9'

I guess this is the spiritual sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11, one of the highest grossing documentaries ever made, but will this one have the same impact when we as a culture are constantly being shit on with Trump dominated media coverage every single day? It's like being trapped in a house with a domestic abuser who won't stop beating on you and destroying your house bit by bit. I guess this time, for me, I don't need Michael Moore to tell me anything I don't already know about what a sick, traitorous criminal Trump is and how the only thing we can do is vote in November for Democrats who will put a check on him and stop this shit, hopefully get rid of him. Funnily enough, Moore is the demographic of a typical Trump voter, yet I'm not sure how he could win over people who haven't made up their minds at this point. But good on him for trying.

It will explore the two most important questions of the Trump Era: How the f**k did we get here, and how the f**k do we get out?

Another awards season contender is upon us, with this film based on the James Baldwin novel, which will be premiering in Toronto in September. Barry Jenkins is fresh off winning Best Picture for Moonlight in 2016, and this is his new film, which gets a pretty stunning trailer. It's set to come out in limited release November 30th.

Tom Hardy is Terrifying in New 'Venom' Trailer

Well, I guess this new trailer solves the problem of not seeing the actual Venom enough in that first teaser. He's definitely all over this one and he's creepy as hell. I don't know if they're going for a sort of horror movie element with him, but since he's not exactly a hero, I guess they could be. I'm intrigued, but Sony hasn't made a decent comic book movie in many years, so we'll have to see.

The world has enough superheroes. Watch the new #Venom trailer now. 10.5.18. One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

See Teaser for Mike Leigh's 'Peterloo'

The great Mike Leigh (Vera Drake, Secrets & Lies, Mr. Turner) has a new historical epic coming out this fall, and it looks like it'll be making its debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Leigh's movies are sometimes too inscrutable for the Oscars, but they're always worthwhile. This one is being distributed through Amazon Studios and coming out in theaters November 9th.

Internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Leigh portrays one of the bloodiest episodes in British history, the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819, where government-backed cavalry charged into a peaceful crowd of 80,000 that gathered in Manchester, England to demand democratic reform.
