'Marriage Story' Leads Golden Globe Nominations

Okay, here we go. Big nominations are coming in this week and everything is accelerated and happening faster this year. The guild nominations will come in days, and here are the Globes. The big news to me is that the obvious Oscar frontrunners are The Irishman, Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, because all three of them got nominated for Picture, Director and Screenplay. Even Marriage Story, which led with 6 nods, missed Director, which is too important. For that reason, I assume that Hollywood will win Comedy in a walk, while Irishman takes Drama. The other big news is that Joker got in here for Best Picture and Director, which is probably a good sign for its guild run. People do like the movie. The guilds will confirm that though, especially the Directors Guild. If they go for Todd Philips, Joker is a definite Best Picture nominee. The Hollywood Foreign Press, as always, is not the industry, but with the awards calendar so condensed this year, they may have more influence than usual. One big snub here is Robert DeNiro for The Irishman, considering that Al Pacino and Joe Pesci were nominated- I’d expect SAG and the Academy to rectify that, but Best Actor is particularly crowded this year (even so, I would definitely nominate DeNiro over say, Leo for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
