Can Gaga win this whole thing?

'Dune' Leads the BAFTA Nominations With 11, 'Power of the Dog' Next With 8

Can Gaga win this whole thing?

The British Film Academy is often a look into how some Oscar voters are feeling, because there is significant overlap in the two organizations. But their nominations are all out of whack too, because they have a jury system selecting most of the acting nominations and all of the directing nominations, in order to ensure some diversity in the picks. This year they tweaked them to allow the top two vote getters to get in, while the jury selected 4 of the 6 nominees for acting. This mostly means that Lady Gaga is the only Best Actress nominee to hit every precursor (there’s no way she was a jury pick) and she’s likely to win here, so is she the new frontrunner for Best Actress? Possibly. I’m waiting to see how well or poorly House of Gucci does with the actual Oscars, because so far it looks like the only place it has major support is with actors. What about the rest of the Academy? In other news, they really seemed to love Licorice Pizza and Power of the Dog, which by the way, is looking more and more like the frontrunner to win the whole thing every day. All in all, the BAFTA winners are usually more predictive than their nominees, so look out for those. But now that we’re done with precursors, the official Oscar nominations come in bright and early next Tuesday morning.
