Tom Cruise lookalike Joseph Kosinsky lands a DGA nom for Top Gun: Maverick

'Top Gun: Maverick' Gets a DGA Nomination

Tom Cruise lookalike Joseph Kosinsky lands a DGA nom for Top Gun: Maverick

The all important Directors Guild speaks and presents its nominations to these five filmmakers:

  • Todd Field, Tar

  • Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick

  • Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once

  • Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin

  • Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans

This means that these are our top five films of the year, and the Oscar Best Picture winner will be from this group (though not necessarily best director). The big news here is Kosinsky’s nomination for helming Top Gun, a filmmaker who’s stayed so anonymous that Tom Cruise hasn’t even tried to give him credit for the movie. But that’s how strong Top Gun is, so watch out. Right now it seems to me like Banshees, Everything Everywhere, Fabelmans and Top Gun are all strong bets to win. We’ll have to see what PGA has tomorrow.

First-Time Feature Nominees

  • Alice Diop, Saint Omer

  • Audrey Diwan, Happening

  • John Patton Ford, Emily the Criminal

  • Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic, Murina

  • Charlotte Wells, Aftersun
