2014 TCA Nominations

The television awards season begins today with the announcement of the Television Critics Association nominations, who give out their honors for achievement in programming on July 19th. The usual nominees were included here, save for a couple newbies like True Detective and Orange is the New Black (plus some latent love for The Mindy Project, which is kind of surprising):

  • American Horror Story: Coven
  • Broadchurch
  • Fargo
  • The Returned
  • True Detective

Career Achievement Award

  • Mark Burnett
  • James Burrows
  • Valerie Harper
  • Jay Leno
  • William Shatner

Heritage Award

  • Lost
  • Saturday Night Live
  • South Park
  • Star Trek
  • Twin Peaks

My favorite nominations here are Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany (who won last year) and the nomination in Miniseries for The Returned, which should really win but won't. I don't quite understand how Orange is the New Black and True Detective can get nominated for Program of the Year but not in their respective comedy and drama categories, and I have to admit I've never seen The Mindy Project or The Good Wife, so I can't speak to whether they deserve this attention or not. I know a lot of people love The Good Wife but I haven't really heard similar things about Mindy. I'm thinking top honors this year will be between Breaking Bad and True Detective, with the latter having the edge simply because it aired more recently. What do you think of the nods today?
