'The Crown,' 'Ted Lasso' and 'The Queen's Gambit' Win Top Emmy Awards

Ted Lasso win big for its first season

Well, there you have it! The Emmys still love their sweeps (The Crown goes 6 for 6), but there was some wealth spreading in there, as they seemed to like Hacks quite a bit (directing and writing!), and the best win of the night for me was Michaela Coel winning writing for the best show of 2020, I May Destroy You. But Ted Lasso did win the top comedy series award and three acting trophies (called Brett Goldstein, who’ll definitely repeat again next year), while Queen’s Gambit won limited series, but lost all the acting awards to Mare of Easttown (should have had more confidence in it in supporting). I went 13 for 18 overall, which isn’t too bad, but I’ve done better.

2021 EMMY WINNERS

DRAMA

Josh O’Connor wins in lead, but so does Olivia Colman! Even in a sweep, The Crown pulls off an upset, as Colman repeats Claire Foy’s achievement of winning for playing the Queen in her final season, over Corrin’s Diana. Get that speech ready, Imelda Staunton! And Tobias Menzies is now an Emmy winner, after being pulled along in a complete Crown sweep.

COMEDY

I knew Brett Goldstein would win this award, as he will next year too. Ted Lasso went 3 for 3 in the acting categories but was beat out by Hacks in writing and directing. Jean Smart finally gets her Emmy in lead.

LIMITED

Mare of Easttown fared well tonight, winning three acting awards even as The Queen’s Gambit took series and directing (but no beating John Adams’ record, guys! Sorry!) And I May Destroy You won writing, as it deserved to.
