Gotham Awards Nominate 'Marriage Story,' 'The Farewell'

Marriage Story starts its awards season journey (but no nod for Scarlett Johansson)

It begins. The Gotham Award nominations kick off 2019 Oscar season, as the little brother of the Independent Spirit Awards. Their awards are handed out by New York critics, some of whom comprise the New York Film Critics circle, so this is a critics award, but most of their picks don’t end up getting Oscar nominations. Some do though, and usually one or two of their Best Feature noms get Best Picture nods. I’m guessing the one from this year will be Marriage Story, although the outright snub of Scarlett Johansson is funny (and maybe prophetic?). I’m glad they remembered The Farewell. I haven’t seen Uncut Gems, Hustlers or Waves yet, but I will eventually.
