As expected, I completely whiffed on my Globes picks this year, so let’s not even go over those tragic prediction losses. But there were some historic picks from the HFPA, as Chloe Zhao became only the second woman to ever win Best Director, and the first in nearly four decades (since Barbra Streisand for Yentl). Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous Globe, cementing his frontrunner status in that category, while Andra Day became the second black woman ever to win Lead Actress in a Drama in a surprising upset. In fact, the Globes went against their own seeming favorites, based on the number of nominations at least, as several of their most nominated films (Mank, Promising Young Woman, The Father) all blanked, while multiple actors won even as their films weren’t nominated anywhere besides acting (Day, Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Foster, Rosamund Pike and Boseman). So the HFPA continues to throw curveballs, as this leaves the supporting and lead actress Oscar races in particular really wide open.

As for the show itself- well, it was pretty awful. I don’t know what the excuse is for this, as the Emmys went fairly smoothly in comparison, so it’s not like they didn’t have a model to look at, but this ceremony was filled with technical glitches, embarrassing gaffes and horribly unfunny comedy bits that went on way too long, leading them to have to play off every single winner in the last hour of the show (after making them Zoom in for this and everything). All I can say is the Oscars have got to figure out a way to do this better in April. Somehow. It’s too awkward making people give acceptance speeches over Zoom and cringe-y when they’re trying to say something meaningful on top of it.
