Here we go with the last of the guild awards. First up we have the sound editors Golden Reel awards, which surprisingly skunked Sound of Metal for Trial of the Chicago 7 (hmm) in their top category.
2021 MPSE WINNERS
Animated Feature: Soul
Documentary Feature: The Reason I Jump
Foreign-Language Feature: The Eight Hundred
Musical Feature: Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of the Fire Saga
Feature Dialogue/ADR: The Trial of the Chicago 7
Effects/Foley: Greyhound
And then there’s the Cinema Audio Society, or the sound mixers, which did go with Sound of Metal (as did Bafta). Remember, the Oscars now only have one category for sound, and I can’t imagine it not going to the movie with the word sound in the title.
2021 CAS WINNERS
Motion Picture - Live Action: Sound of Metal
Motion Picture - Animated: Soul
Motion Picture - Documentary: The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Now we have the ACE Eddie award, which is from the editors, where Chicago 7 again beat Sound of Metal and showed real strength, as editing is one of the major categories that signals Best Picture heat. Even more surprising was the comedy/musical category, where Palm Springs beat Promising Young Woman, which was the only Best Picture nominee in the category, That never happens and that to me pours cold water on the theory that Promising Young Woman is strong enough to contend for a possible Best Picture upset.

Animated: Soul
And finally, the American Society of Cinematographers, which matches Oscar about 50% of the time and surprisingly went with Mank here over Nomadland, which has won this award almost everywhere else. Hmm. Means this could be 50/50 on Oscar night.
