To the surprise of no one, Jane Campion won the Directors Guild award last night, on her way to finally triumphing at the Oscars, nearly thirty years after being only the second woman ever nominated for Best Director for The Piano. It’s long overdue recognition and duly deserved. The first time feature winner was Maggie Gyllenhaal, also extremely deserved, for The Lost Daughter, which I’m thinking is going to take the screenplay award.
