Well, it was another unfortunate episode, although not nearly as painful as the premiere, if only because Unfunny Aidy was barely seen tonight. Too bad, because Sarah Silverman was pretty game, but as usual, it's hardly ever the host's fault that the skits are terrible.
COLD OPEN: It's a 60 Minutes opening, with Beck as Steve Kroft interviewing Jay's President Obama about the ISIS threat and the recent Secret Service dust-ups. It's a very boring opening, no strong punchlines, super lame. Ugh.
MONOLOGUE: Ok, so Sarah comes out and basically does a stand-up bit where she messes with an audience member and fields questions from herself of 20 years ago when she was briefly a cast member. I wouldn't say that this is hilarious, but when comics want to come out and do their own unique thing, it is usually better than the sketches, and I do like Sarah Silverman's humor, so it's okay.
FAULT IN OUR STARS 2: A spoof trailer for a sequel to The Fault in Our Stars, but about the ebola virus. Taran and Sarah are kinda funny as the teens in jeopardy. It's probably the highlight of the night, although the fake trailers always make the same exact jokes about reviews of the movie. Getting kind of tired of that.
JOAN RIVERS ROAST: Sarah is Joan Rivers roasting dead celebrities in heaven, but she flubs her lines a whole bunch, not that the lines were any good anyway. This is mostly because Sarah wanted to do a tribute to Joan, who was an idol of hers. This actually wouldn't be a bad idea for a skit, but there are NO funny jokes in it. God, these people can't write. Should have been easy.
WHITES: A short ad about the declining white voter in elections. It's just a couple of jabs about white people and camping, really. Mild.
SUPPORTIVE WOMEN: A sketch that spoofs women in soap operas being nice to each other instead of bitchy. Lame, again no funny lines, bleh. The only reason this stuff isn't painful tonight is because Unfunny Aidy isn't here, for which we can be thankful. She makes me want to throw things at the TV, while most of these guys are just boring.
WEEKEND UPDATE: Thankfully, there are some funnier jokes tonight about the Secret Service and ebola, while Michael Che is much more relaxed and sharp in his delivery. That makes for an improvement, and Kenan's appearance as Al Sharpton is usually good for a chuckle or two. It ends on Sarah and Kate as a feminist music duo who come out and sing a song about women that doesn't quite hit, but overall I'm just glad this is better than last week. Gives me some hope for Update at least.
THE RIVER SISTERS: A terrible skit about a Tina Turner girl group who all hate their job on a river boat and tell the crowd in between verses. Not funny at all. And I don't think it's Cecily, Sarah or Sasheer's fault, it just sucks.
AIRPORT: This is strange one, and I will say that it did kinda make me laugh at the beginning. Sarah is picked up by her brother Taran at the airport and confesses to cheating on her boyfriend...who happens to be Bobby as he pops up in the seat behind her, wanting to propose. Ok, that made me laugh. But they push it too hard with more people popping up (parents, Adam Levine) and it just gets tired and dumb. I guess a funny start is something though.
POEM: A dreaded Kyle and Beck bit about soulmates who beat each other up. Anything with these two guys is an acquired taste that is just not mine. Bad.
VITAMIX: Oddball last sketch of the night where Sarah tries to get the extremely expensive price of a blender Vanessa bought, and Vanessa mocks her money problems. I think this is a jab at gossipy housewives or something. Weird, but harmless, I guess? Maybe I just like Vanessa.
So, Sarah did a good job tonight and she tried really hard, but the writing on this show just sucks so bad. I can't emphasize it enough. I'd have to give tonight a D, but it was a slight improvement on last week. Not nearly enough, though. BIll Hader is back to host next time (I don't know why these guys come back so soon), so at least that should guarantee one or two funny skits, right? God, I hope so. See you then.
