Ok, so maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the critics are going to be unanimous this year. The NYFCC chose The Irishman, same as the NBR did yesterday, and I’m not sure why this surprises me, but I just didn’t think it’d be the kind of movie that would sweep the critics awards. But they did spread the wealth, choosing Antonio Banderas in Best Actor, Lupita Nyong’o in Best Actress (an absolute advocate choice to try to get her nominated for that movie at the Oscars), Joe Pesci in Supporting Actor and Laura Dern in Supporting Actress. A bit of a wild card pick for the Safdie Brothers in Best Director, but I guess I’ll have to seek out Uncut Gems after all. My favorite choice here is Antonio Banderas- I hope he manages to slide into the Oscar nominations. Next up are the LA Film Critics on Sunday- those guys usually go for out there picks, purposely not trying to influence Oscars, unlike New York.
