Well, we got a couple surprises tonight! Sam Mendes and 1917 in particular, which came in strong for Best Director and Best Picture Drama, leaving The Irishman totally and unexpectedly shut out. Interesting. And right as the Oscar voting is happening too. On the comedy side, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home Picture, Supporting Actor and Screenplay (coincidentally the same three awards that Green Book won last year). I only got 8 out of 14 right, but it’s always a crapshoot with the Globes. With Oscar nominations on the way in just over a week, we’ll see if these have any impact, because as of right now it still feels like a wide open race in Best Picture/Director at least (we may have our acting frontrunners though, strange and awkward speeches from Renee Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix aside). Ricky Gervais was kind of lame as host this year, but Ellen Degeneres and Tom Hanks gave great speeches for their lifetime achievement awards, helping to keep things moving. This coming week is a big one for awards season, as we have both the PGA and DGA nominees coming on Tuesday- the most important guilds for Best Picture predictions.

2020 GOLDEN GLOBE WINNERS

  • Best Picture Drama: 1917

  • Lead Actor in a Drama: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker

  • Lead Actress in a Drama: Renee Zellweger, Judy

  • Best Picture Musical/Comedy: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

  • Lead Actress in a Musical/Comedy: Awkwafina, The Farewell

  • Lead Actor in a Musical/Comedy: Taron Egerton, Rocketman

  • Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt, Once Upon in Time Hollywood

  • Supporting Actress: Laura Dern, Marriage Story

  • Best Foreign-Language Film: Parasite

  • Best Director: Sam Mendes, 1917

  • Best Screenplay: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

  • Best Animated Feature: Missing Link

  • Best Score: Joker

  • Best Song: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” Rocketman

I was happy to see my prediction of Taron Egerton winning Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical pay off- I think he will likely get that Oscar nomination now too
