ASC, CDG and CAS Nominations Rack Up Nods for 'Mank,' 'Chicago 7'

Rounding up more guild nominations here. First up is the biggest one that announced today, the American Society of Cinematographers, who dropped a surprise with an out of nowhere nomination for Cherry, and showed just how loved Trial of the Chicago 7 is, a standard courtroom drama with unspectacular cinematography if ever there was one. This tells me that movie has a real shot at Best Picture, especially if it manages to win a major guild award, like PGA or SAG.

ASC NOMINATIONS

  • Cherry

  • Mank

  • Nomadland

  • News of the World

  • The Trial of the Chicago 7

Next is the Cinema Audio Society (sound mixers) whose nominations I missed last week. No surprises in their main category either, with continued love for Chicago 7 and technical strength for News of the World, which I still think can get into Best Picture next week.

CAS NOMINATIONS

Motion Pictures - Live Action

  • Greyhound

  • Mank

  • News of the World

  • Sound of Metal

  • The Trial of the Chicago 7

And finally, the Costume Designers Guild, whose nominees combined with BAFTA and Critics Choice, tend to result in the Oscar list. Emma, Ma Rainey, and Mank seem to be frontrunners here, having gotten in everywhere.

Mank is also a heavy guild favorite, but I think it might be this year’s Irishman- perhaps the nominations leader but no major wins

CDG NOMINATIONS

Excellence in a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film:

  • Dolittle

  • Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story

  • Mulan

  • Pinocchio

  • Wonder Woman 1984

Excellence in a Contemporary Film:

  • Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar

  • Birds of Prey

  • Da 5 Bloods

  • Promising Young Woman

  • The Prom

Excellence in a Period Film:

  • Emma

  • Judas and the Black Messiah

  • Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

  • Mank

  • One Night in Miami

This category has moved away from period styles in recent years, but Emma’s costumes really should prevail
