BAFTA Upends its Voting System, Results in Most Diverse Nominees Ever

A bizarre result for Promising Young Woman, an acclaimed British film that got 6 nods, but snubbed in Actress and Director thanks to BAFTA’s new voting system

Okay, so, a couple things here. One, after years of criticism, BAFTA completely upended its voting system, and now the acting and directing nominees are picked by committees of 12 people, some of whom are not BAFTA members, which seemed to have the desired result of finally landing a group of diverse nominees, the most diverse in BAFTA history. But second, there are many movies and names on this list that I’ve never heard of, and that will not result in corresponding Oscar nominations for most (Carey Mulligan wasn’t nominated!). So, I think from now on we’re going to have to look at the BAFTA’s as being more like what they used to be before the mid-2000’s- entirely separate from Oscar precursors. Except for maybe the Best Film category (which obviously looks like the frontrunners in awards season overall), this is a list that achieved the desired result at the expense of having anything to do with predicting the Oscars…which is maybe a good thing? The Brits should do their own thing, shouldn’t they? If anything it ought to be a celebration of purely British film anyway, right? The Oscar nominees are next Monday, and this year it’s more likely to be entirely its own list of stuff than any time in many years previously.
