Power of the Dog coming on strong with the guilds, as expected
More guilds today, with the announcement of the Cinema Audio Society and American Society of Cinematographers, representing the sound mixers and cinematographers unions. First up, let’s look at the CAS noms, with nods for Spider-Man and Bond, along with Dune, which has landed in every guild announcement so far. Action movies and musicals always make the sound categories, but this shows strength for The Power of the Dog, which is neither, and which also got a sound nomination from the editors.

Belfast’s lighting is appreciated by the ASC
And the ASC is a big precursor award that often matches Best Picture nominations, so the movies that land here are usually heavy contenders for the top prize. Which is why it’s surprising that West Side Story missed. And real strength again for Nightmare Alley, clearly a guild favorite at the very least. The ASC does love it some black and white, with Belfast and Macbeth getting in here. I think one of these misses at the Oscars though, probably for West Side Story.
